Dia de los Ninos : Day of the Child

Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros is traditionally celebrated on April 30, but every day is Day of the Child "Cada día es Día de los Niños"

Welcome to the Riverside County Library Systems Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros (Day of the Child / Day of the Book) website, promoting the county-wide celebration of this important event in libraries and Schools. Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros provides a wonderful opportunity to promote the power of books and reading to change lives for all children with an emphasis on bilingual and multicultural children. We hope you will browse this site as a resource in planning your own celebration

Riverside County’s Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros

The Riverside County Library has hosted a Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros celebration in each of the last five years since 2004. In the first year, six of the county’s 22 libraries participated. By the third year, participation had expanded to 22 of the county’s now 29 library sites. In each year, resources have been available to bring an nationally-known author to some of the library sites, usually this has been sites in our eastern, or desert region where concentrations of Latino residents are higher (featured authors have been Francisco X. Alarcon in 2005, Lulu Delacre in 2006, Jorge Argueta in 2007 and Pat Mora in 2008). Along with author visits celebrations have included bilingual story time, craft making, cultural performers, music and dance.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of library staff and support of the County Librarian, RCLS has tripled the number of county library branches—from 6 in 2004 to 29 in 2008—that offer Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros celebration. “Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros has proven to be a growing and successful event throughout our libraries and our communities are quickly responding to this literacy-based event,” states Nancy Johnson, the Riverside County Librarian. As a result, Riverside County Library System has taken the initiative to promote Día on a statewide level.

The celebration of Dia de los Niños/Dia de los Libros has helped us introduce library programs and usage to first time patrons and brought recurrent library users to this wonderful celebration of books, language and culture. (As a result of this celebration we had first time users and recurring library patrons attend a wonderful program that links the power of books, language and culture…in result of this celebration we had the opportunity to welcome recurring and new library users to the library to celebrate this wonderful celebration that links books, language and culture. Our celebrations varied in size and programming but all of the celebrations emphasized the importance of books, language and culture to families and children of all ages. As a result of this wonderful celebration that links the power of books, language and culture into a fun and educational event for the entire family.) Día has given us an opportunity to link books, language and culture. Riverside county library system has become a catalyst in promoting Dia de los Niños/ Dia de los Libros programs in libraries across the state of California.

In 2008, the Riverside County Library System was one of two libraries nationwide to be the recipient of the 2008 Raúl and Estela Mora Award presented by REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking, in honor of the Riverside County’s efforts to promote Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), an annual celebration of the power of books and reading. We were honored not only for our annual celebration of this event, but also for the efforts of our staff to assist the California State Library in efforts to encourage libraries across the state to hold celebrations honoring children, books and reading (www.diacalifornia.org).

Today we have 33 libraries in our library system that are all eagerly planning their respective Día celebrations, which we know will definitely be a success. Our goal is to promote the observation of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros in public and school libraries not only in April but throughout the year. Getting an increasing number of people to recognize the month of April as Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros has been one of our biggest accomplishments. Riverside County Library System has been able to do this thanks to the work and dedication of our partners that strive to promote literacy, library use, culture and language to residents of Riverside County. Since our celebrations began in 2004 to the planning of our celebrations for 2009 Día de los Niños/ Día de los Libros has reached its goals of promoting literacy, language and culture throughout the county. We have established information about Día on our webpage—including posting of all programs in our online events calendar—and plan to add more information about events and information.
