In 1976, the current 23,000 sq.’ building was opened as the “Regional Library” for the Riverside City and County Public Library System. Its official name is the Max T. McCandless Memorial Library. It was open six days a week, including four evenings until 9:00 p.m. The offices for both the regional staff including two delivery “messengers” and the Area Branch Supervisor were located in the “Regional Library Headquarters” in the east portion of the building. From the mid-1990s to 2011 the area was used for the successful “Project Read With Me” youth literacy project. The Coachella Valley Bookmobile office, desks and workspace for the Friends of Indio Library, and classroom for Adult ESL students are currently using this space.

The Indio Public Library houses more than 89,000 items. The library is also the desert’s resource for microfilm access to local newspapers as far back as 1890s.

The City of Indio is known locally as the “City of Festivals” and they’re particularly proud of the fact that they are in the Guinness Book of World Records for serving
