The Woodcrest Library Summer Reading Program Grand Finale is almost here.  It will be held July 23rd, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm.  We will be at Frank Augustus Miller Middle School in their Gymnasium.  Chick-Fil-A will cater lunch and we will have pizza too.  We will have our giant prize drawing with bikes, tickets to museums, Ripley's Believe it or Not, toys, games and much more.  Children must be present to win and the bins with the tickets will be at the finale.  Hope to see you all there.

Adults 50 and older are invited to our Fit After 50 free exercise classes, held Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9:00 am.  Classes include stretching, strength training, balance and more.  We will hold classes at Sandals Church, located on the corner of Van Buren Blvd and Porter Ave.  All fitness levels are encouraged participate.

This is a good chance for children and their caregivers to make friends and interact with each other.  We will also have Paws to Read, starting at 11:30, which is a chance for the children to read to a service dog.  Choose a book and read it to a friendly, book loving dog.

Storytime will be held at Sandals Church each Thursday at 11 am.  It will include stories, songs, flannel board stories fingerplays and more.  We will include an age appropriate craft afterwards.  This program teaches children how to listen and follow directions, preparing them for school and socializing with other children.  We will also have Paws to Read, starting at 11:30, which is a chance for the children to read to a service dog.  Choose a book and read it to a friendly, book loving dog

The Woodcrest Library began as a stop on the Riverside County Bookmobile schedule in 1999. The bookmobile stopped in front of the Stater Bros. Market located in the Woodcrest Plaza shopping center.    By 2001 it was decided that the Woodcrest area needed a library building of its own.  Space was leased in the same shopping center and two suites were combined to make an 1,800 square foot area to house the new library.  The library opened October 21, 2001.  This store front had all of the necessary requirements.  It had public computers, a children’s area, tables for studying, magazines and comfortable chairs to read them in.  The library was an instant success.

By 2006 we had outgrown the store front location.  The county built a beautiful 10,080 square foot LEEDS Certified building to house the new Woodcrest Community Library. The Grand Opening was held on November 10, 2007.  This new building had many improvements. The library has a large children’s area, featuring computers, tables and chairs to scale, a cozy nook for reading and it has its own rock.  There are two study rooms located next to the dedicated Teen area, and many more tables and chairs for studying throughout the library. We also have many comfortable chairs for reading and lounging.  The library building and surrounding grounds have wireless access so that patrons can use their own laptops in the library and the collection is tagged with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) circulation allowing self-checkout. 

The Woodcrest Library has the prestige of being the first County Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDS) certified building.  Some of the features of a Leeds Certified building include overhangs eliminating solar heat and glare in the library, a daylight diffusion control skylight, a storm water-permeable parking lot composed of decomposed granite, task specific lighting, low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emitting materials, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, day lighting at Children’s Reading Area and Forest Stewardship Council Certified Wood for tables, chairs and paneling.   Along with making the library a sustainable site these features provide the library with water efficiency and good environmental quality.  The surrounding grounds include shaded and light colored paving to reduce heat near the library and a water-wise garden.
