Lincoln warned the South in his Inaugural Address: "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you....You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it."There are no rules for this club. Stories and friends gather for fun at the story time for Toddlers.  The activities are developed for ages 3 and younger.  The experience provides an environment to meet others while having fun listening to stories.  In the process they gain opportunities to develop listening skills, attention skills, learn new vocabulary and have social opportunities with other children and their parents.  The story time also has a simple craft for those who choose to participate.  Although this does not have a baby component very young children are invited for the vocabulary and socializing experience it provides.More information about the importance of talking, reading and singing to babies and young children can be found at http://www.first5california.com/services-support.aspx?id=21

Valerie Velez, who has a masters degree in public health, provides this free program on mindfulness. Mindfulness at its core is about increasing awareness of the often unappreciated aspects of our daily lives, and achieving a quality of attentiveness that we can bring to our everyday, momentary experience. It is defined as the ability to pay full attention to what is happening around and within us at any given time without criticism or judgment. Developing this skill is linked to improvements in physical and mental well-being, and an increased sense of peace and equanimity in life. This one hour session will combine practice activities with some of the current science and research about mindfulness.  No experience required. No fee. This presentation is open to everyone.

Our read for September is "A Land So Strange: the epic journey of Cabeza de Vaca"" by Andres Resendez. In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. But the expedition went horribly wrong. Of the four hundred men who had embarked on the voyage, only four survived - three Spaniards and an African slave. The men lived with a variety of nomadic Indians and learned several indigenous languages. They saw lands, peoples, plants, and animals that no outsider had ever before seen. Based on the diary of Cabeza de Vaca. All are welcome to our book group. We read a variety of books, non-fiction, fiction, light, heavy. Check each month for our new title.
